Job Description

Role Summary:

Our volunteer drivers are a lifeline for people who need to get to vital hospital appointments.  You’ll be providing a personal, empathetic transport service by driving clients to and from appointments and treatment in hospitals.

Hours:

A Volunteer Driver would typically be asked to undertake a journey once or possibly twice a week.  The time this takes would depend on the length of the journey and the duration of the appointment.

There is no obligation to commit to a number of drives and the volume depends on the number of clients requiring transport.

Location:

Driving your own vehicle from your home you will collect service users from all over West Northumberland, Tynedale and Ponteland. The majority of visits are to hospitals or hospices in Newcastle such as the Freeman, RVI or Marie Curie but could also be to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle or Wansbeck General Hospital in Ashington.  All mileage expenses will be reimbursed.

Who We Are Looking For:

  • You will need to have your own four door car and a valid driving licence
  • Your car must be safe, clean and fit for the transport of clients
  • You should be an experienced and competent driver

Our volunteer drivers may engage in conversations surrounding the health of a client therefore confidentiality, empathy and a willingness to listen are key skills.  You should enjoy meeting new people and work well independently and as part of the wider transport team.

Training and Support:

Volunteer Drivers will be asked to complete Adult Safeguarding and Lone Working training in order to prepare them for their role and will be subject to an Enhanced Check through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

We operate a number sharing service between drivers for advice and guidance.  We host regular driver meetings so you can discuss your experience in a confidential setting.  Any updates regarding the transport service will be given during these meetings.  You will be supported by our Administrative Assistant and the Head of Care Services.

Benefits of Volunteering:

Volunteer driving is incredibly rewarding as you really can make a huge difference to someone’s life. Feedback from clients over the years has been overwhelmingly positive with many people reporting that the service was a vital lifeline.

By volunteering in this role, you are delivering our service at the frontline. It is here that you will see first-hand the benefits that Tynedale Hospice at Home can provide.
